What Does Henna Do To Your Hair?

What is henna?

Is henna good for your hair – Lawsonia Inermis or Henna is a plant used to dye hair and skin. It has been used for centuries in India, Africa, and the Middle East to color hair, skin, and nails. Henna can be bought in powder or paste form and can be used to color your hair in a range of colors from red to reddish-brown

Henna is a natural way to color your hair and is safe for your hair and skin. It can also help to condition, strengthen and add shine to your hair. Also, many people use henna to cover up gray hairs.

Furthermore, henna balances both Kapha and Pitta dosha. It is considered light and drying in nature.  Henna is also helpful in curing headaches and in healing skin diseases like ringworm, psoriasis, and scabies.

Henna is often used to highlight naturally dark hair or to change the color of your hair altogether.

It can also help prevent dandruff and scalp infections. Henna is a natural alternative to chemical hair dyes, and is less likely to damage your hair.

Use Henna according to your hair dosha type.

If used appropriately according to your hair dosha type, henna can be used to add color to your hair, protect it from damage, and make it softer and shinier.

Henna is described as pitta dosha (pitta balancing) and useful in skin & scalp diseases. However, we must be careful about its ability to dry out skin and hair. For premature greying, dandruff, and other scalp disorders, the Henna leaf is extremely useful due to its healing properties.

Greying hair and oily scalp are signs of aggravated pitta dosha.  The Henna leaf helps balance Pitta dosha by cutting down oiliness and reducing scalp Pitta accumulation. This also reduces the tendency to grey fast.

If you have a combination scalp with Pitta and Vata imbalances such as premature greying with dry scalp and frizzy hair, henna should be used carefully. Its drying nature must be counteracted with hair oiling to ensure the herb does not dry hair.

Henna can become a major problem for Pitta Vata mixed hair types if used regularly.  Regular henna use for these hair types can dry out the scalp and hair if not countered with regular oiling. Therefore, it is important to oil your hair regularly. Also, use a very mild nondecreasing hair cleanser then follow up with a moisturizing conditioner.

Using henna once every 2 to 3 months is sufficient.

Adding oils, or butter to a Henna will interfere with dye uptake. If your primary purpose is to color hair, please avoid adding oils to your henna mix. – Is henna good for your hair

How to use henna for hair

Henna has been used for centuries as a natural dye and conditioner for hair. If you’re looking to add some shine and depth to your locks, henna is a good option to consider.

Is henna good for your hair? Here’s how to use it:

First, henna requires an acidic medium in order for the lawsone (which produces red color dye)  to release. Therefore, adding a natural acidic herb such as amla will improve dye release. For extra conditioning add aloe vera or ground fenugreek seeds to your mixture.

Mix the henna powder, amla, and other herbs (if adding) with water until it forms a paste, then apply it to your hair from root to tip.

Wrap your head in plastic wrap or a shower cap and let the henna sit for 2 – 6 hours. For those with greying hair or for deep rich red tones let sit for 4 – 6 hours.

Thoroughly, rinse the henna out of your hair with warm water, then wait at least 24 hours before cleansing and conditioning. This allows time for the color to fully oxidize and prevent fading.

For Vata hair types, generously pre-oil your hair at least one hour before applying henna to reduce the drying effects of henna on your hair.

You’ll notice that your hair feels softer and looks shinier after just one treatment.
