Tofu fried rice is the perfect alternative to egg fried rice if you are seeking a protein based, egg free, no cholesterol chinese fried rice recipe! To make this recipe even more healthier it was made with brown rice! For more nutritional value load this meal up with your favorite veggies!
Tofu Fried Rice
Cook Time 15 to 30 minutes.
For the Tofu
1 package Extra firm Tofu
1 tbsp neutral tasting oil such as canola or sesame oil
1 tbsp soy sauce
1/2 tsp ginger
1 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp onion
1 tsp brown sugar
salt and pepper to taste
For the Rice
4 cups Pre-cooked cooled and chilled Brown Rice
1 tbsp of canola or sesame oil
1 small onion, chopped
1 tbsp minced garlic
1 chopped carrot
1/2 cup of sliced green onions
1 tsp of rice vinegar
2 tbsp of soy sauce
Salt and pepper to taste
1/2 to 1 cup of vegetables of choice water cress, mushrooms, peas, corn, zucchini, or summer squash
Note: Add your selected veggies to the pan after cooking the carrots.
Prepare the Tofu
Tofu is a very delicious alternative to eggs if cooked and seasoned properly!
Take one package of extra firm tofu, drain, and wrap it in a clean dish towel. Place it between two plates and add weight on top of it. This presses all the water out of it to make room for your favorite seasonings. Place dish in the fridge and wait for 3o minutes to 1 hour to give time for the towel to soak up all of the water.
Gives the Best Flavor
Mix all ingredients in a shallow dish, this is your marinade. Now, cut the tofu int 12 to 15 width size planks no thicker than 1/4 inch. Put the pieces into the dish and let marinade for a few hours (about 2 to 8 hours). Can be prepare first thing in the morning before heading out to work.
Bake the Tofu: Set oven to 450 degrees fahrenheit. Cover baking sheet with aluminum foil and spray with non-stick cooking spray. Take the tofu out of the marinade and arrange on the baking sheet. Bake 15 minutes, flip over tofu, brush with more marinade then bake for another 5 minutes.
Quick Prep Easy Tofu Fry
Fast Easy Tofu Fry: Omit soy sauce, mix ingredients together and sprinkle on top of tofu.
Pour 1 tbsp of oil into a wok or skillet and set stove top to medium high heat until oil begins to sizzle. Put the tofu in the skillet and cook until light brown. Flip tofu over and cook the other side. Take tofu out the pan, place on a dish and cover to keep warm. Continue with the fried rice.
Time to Fry the Rice!
- Heat 1 teaspoon of oil over medium heat, add the chopped carrots and cook for 2 minutes. (If using, add other veggies to the pan and cook thoroughly) Add the onion and garlic to the skillet and cook for 3 minutes until translucent. Sprinkle with a little salt and pepper then remove vegetables from the pan. Pan should be scrapped clean.
- In a small bowl add the soy sauce and vinegar. Reheat the skillet up over medium heat and add 2 teaspoon oil. Add the brown rice and fry making sure the rice is coated with the oil and heated through. Drizzle sauce over rice, mix into rice until absorbed and heated through for about 2 minutes. Fold in the green onions and vegetables. Turn off the heat, serve and enjoy!
